A manager’s attitude can greatly affect the work environment for the employee. Today we will see McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y, This deals with perceptions that managers hold for their employees.

Managers who fall under category X, Believe that his employees don’t like working and will avoid any work as much as possible. In order to get the work done manager feels that the only way is by threatening them. They also feel most employees prefer to be directed in order to complete job so managers need to look at each and every detail by himself. Managers who fall under this category will watch his employees closely and tell what to do and what not to do. They are motivated by Fear and Money.

Managers who tends to fall under category Y will assume that

  • his employees like to work.
  • People enjoy working towards the goal.
  • commitment to goals increases based on perceived rewards for achieving them.

Most employees seek responsibility. Employees imagination creativity and cleverness can be used to solve the problem. Employees are motivated by a variety of rewards.
