SECTION – A                       CELESTIAL NAVIGATION            (40 Marks)

QUESTION NO 1 IS COMPULSORY. ATTEMPT ANY THREE  FROM THE REMAINING. ALL QUESTIONS CARRY EQUAL MARKS.

  1. On 30th April 2008, in DR 00⁰ 20’ N 60⁰ 12’W, the sextant altitude of the Sun’s UL East of the meridian was 44⁰4’ when the GPS clock showed 01h 00m 52s. . If t IE was 3.1’ off the arc and HE was 20 m,  find the longitude by means of Longitude by Chronometer method and the direction of PL.                                                                                            (10 Marks)

 

  1. On 1st Sept 2008, before Noon at ship in DR 18o 00’N 178o 11’E, the sextant altitude of the Pole star was 18o4’at 05h 21m 08s by chronometer (error 01m 18s slow). HE = 12.5m. IE = 1.6’on the arc.  Find the direction of the LOP and a position through which to draw it.(10 Marks)
  2. On 23rd Sept 2008, in DR 23o 40’N 161o 56E, the sextant meridian altitude of the Sun’s lower limb was 66o6’. If IE was 2.3’on the arc and HE was 10.5m, find the latitude and the LOP.                                          (10 Marks)

Sun’s UL East of the meridian was 44o 13.4’when the GPS clock showed          12h 00m 52s.  If IE was 3.1’off the arc and HE was 20m, find the intercept and the direction of the LOP.                                                          (10 Marks)
