UNIT 10 – offshore supply vessels

Types and features of offshore supply vessels

These ships are basically 50 to 100 meters in length and accomplish a variety of tasks. The primary function for most of these vessels is logistic support and transportation of goods, tools, equipment and personnel to and from offshore oil platforms and other offshore structures.

They can be mainly classified in following Main groups.

  1. Oil Exploration and Drilling Vessels
  2. Offshore Support Vessels
  3. Offshore Production Vessels
  4. Special/Construction Purpose Vessels

Oil Exploration and Drilling Vessels

drillship is a merchant vessel designed for use in exploratory offshore drilling of new oil and gas wells or for scientific drilling purposes.

There are different types of offshore drilling units such as the oil platformjackup rigsubmersible drilling rigsemi-submersible platform and of course drillships.

Example of such vessel –

  • Floating Platforms
  • Tenders
  • drill ships

Offshore Support Vessels

Some offshore vessels provide the necessary manpower and technical reinforcement required so that the operational processes in the high seas continue smoothly and without any problem. Such vessels are called as offshore support vessels.

they do the following job

  1. transport the required structural components to the designated high seas sector.
  2. providing assistance to supply freight .
  3. They are designed&made to suit the operational demands .

Example of such Vessels

  • Anchor Handling Tug Vessel (AHTV)
  • Seismic Vessel
  • Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs)
  • Well Intervention Vessel
  • Accommodation Ships

Offshore Production Vessels

floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons, and for the storage of oil. A FPSO vessel is designed to receive hydrocarbons produced by itself or from nearby platforms or subsea template, process them, and store oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker or, less frequently, transported through a pipeline. OR
Offshore production vessels refer to those vessels that help in the production processes in the drilling units in the high seas.

Special/Construction Purpose Vessels

They are used for construction of structure in sea , so they are called offshore construction purpose vessels.

Other offshore vessels  of these type also include those that provide anchorage and tugging assistance and those kinds of ships that help in the positioning of deep sub-water cable and piping lines.

main type of such vessels –

  • Crane Vessel
  • Pipe Laying Vessel
